Punjab government funds Rs 18 billion for municipal services

LAHORE: The government of Punjab has disbursed Rs 18 billion to 136 tehsil councils for the immediate provision of municipal services to citizens, ARY News reported on Friday.

The secretary of the local government disbursed the funds to the tehsil councils on the directives of the Chief Minister of Punjab, Usman Buzdar, with the aim of providing facilities to the citizens.

Usman Buzdar said in a statement that the provincial government has formulated its annual development program for 2020-2021 which will benefit the people of 306 local governments. He said a new era of development has started at the local level.

The chief minister detailed that various development programs have been approved worth Rs 18 billion, while tenders for other programs have also been issued to kick off the work.

The government has set a proportion of funds for development projects of up to Rs7 billion for rural areas in addition to initiating work on various projects for metropolitan and municipal companies. 967 projects were launched for sewers and roads.

The development works of 131 drinking water supply projects have been launched, 33 for the solid waste management system and 10 projects for health.

CM Buzdar said the use of the funds will speed up the development process besides helping to stop the spread of disease through the provision of clean water and a modern solid waste management system.
