Major spring blizzard affects municipal services in Portage –

Portage la Prairie is warning that the major spring blizzard we are experiencing will impact municipal services throughout the region.

The city says getting around will become increasingly difficult on Wednesday as the day progresses, with widespread freeway closures a near certainty. By Wednesday evening, getting around the city could become difficult as the heavy snow and high winds continue, and the same is expected on Thursday.

According to the city, snow removal will begin as soon as it is safe to do so. Crews will focus on priority areas allowing emergency services, followed by regular residential routes over the next few days.

The city notes that solid waste collection is scheduled for Zone 2 on Wednesday. If the contractor cannot complete the route due to weather conditions, the remainder of the collection will be collected on Saturday.

Solid waste collection on day 3 of Thursday, April 14 is cancelled. The collection will be rescheduled for Saturday, depending on the weather.

Recycling will remain on schedule and collection will take place on Wednesday and Thursday for zones 2 and 3, depending on the weather. In case of cancellation, the collection will resume on Saturday,

Finally, the city adds that its facilities will be closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Staff will always be available by phone or email.

The city will provide updates as needed on its social media pages and through its “Connect Portage” emergency notification system.

Portage reminds citizens that they are encouraged to stay home for the duration of the storm if possible.

A major spring blizzard will reach our region this evening, affecting municipal services such as snow removal, garbage and recycling collection and causing the closure of facilities. Learn more here:
