China’s top flower market Kunming sees robust business growth

KUNMING, China, June 20, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Kunming, the capital of southwest China’s Yunnan Province, saw booming trade in its flower markets in 2021 and leads the trade in the country’s fresh-cut flowers, according to the Kunming Municipal Government.

A total of 10.26 billion fresh-cut flower stems were sold in the Dounan Flower Market in 2021, a 25 percent increase from the previous year. As a barometer of China’s flower market, Kunming also saw its trade volume in 2021 reach 11.2 billion yuan (about 1.8 billion U.S. dollars), up 38 percent year on year.

Representing China’s largest fresh-cut flower market in terms of trade volume and export value for 23 consecutive years, Dounan has become Asia’s largest fresh-cut flower trading market, with a portfolio of fresh cut flower products, bonsai, green seedlings and gardening equipment.

Trading can be carried out both on-site and through electronic auction services. Currently, 40,000 of Dounan’s 70,000 permanent residents are engaged in the flower industry.

The average annual temperature in Kunming is about 15 degrees Celsius, the average annual precipitation is about 1000 mm, and the average annual sunshine time is about 2200 hours. Kunming, nicknamed “Spring City” and “Flower City”, is an ideal place for leisure, tourism, vacation and residence.

At present, in Kunming International Flora Auction Trading Center, more than 1,500 varieties of fresh-cut flowers from more than 40 categories, such as rose, Barberton daisy, carnation and hydrangea, have been traded in more than 50 countries and regions, including Thailand, Japan, Singapore, Russia and Australia through auction operations.

Flower growers and florists pack fresh cut flowers and transport them to the Kunming International Flora Auction Trading Center every morning. Carts line the waiting room and brokers hold flashlights to check the quality of the flowers. Each bouquet must undergo strict inspection and rating before auction. There are six grades in the grading system: AA, A, B, C, D and E. The better the quality, the higher the grade and the information will also be recorded on the receipt to form an “identity card “detailed.

To improve the efficiency of the flower trade, the Kunming International Flora Auction Trading Center has constantly improved trading modes, and the center has also taken the initiative and introduced a number of e-commerce live broadcast platforms to stimulate flower sales and the income of flower sellers and farmers.

Dounan, Kunming, also gradually built a one-stop logistics station for collection, cargo allocation, security inspection and delivery to major regional airports in Yunnan province, to build a logistics system and terminal distribution. Fresh cut flowers can arrive at the terminal market between 24 and 48 hours after picking.

After years of development, Dounan owns two well-known brands in Chinese flower industry, “Dounan” and “KIFA”. Dounan is more than a flower land but a complex platform for auctions, logistics, R&D, agricultural resources, tourism, etc., and has attracted more than 4,000 related enterprises. The strong domestic and foreign markets have jointly infused the Dounan flower industry with great potential.
