Council also makes key decisions related to various aspects of the City, adopts bylaws, creates policies, approves budgets and directs / approves the types of programs and services the City will provide.

How the Board makes its decisions

The city council receives requests and recommendations for new projects, services or programs and bylaws, reports submitted by advisory committees, city employees and / or residents who speak at council meetings during a delegation or a public question period. City by-laws are local public regulatory laws that apply in a certain area or throughout the city. The Council obtains its authority (a form of delegated legislation) to pass laws through the Municipalities Act which specifies what the City can regulate through bylaws. Once the Board has made a decision on an application, it implements its decisions through the promulgation of a by-law or company policy.

How you can participate

Requests can be made to Council through committee meetings, petitions, community meetings. Board and committee meetings

Board Meetings: Council meetings are a committee of the whole, which means that all Council members sit on the Council. At City Council meetings, Council is responsible for establishing the policies of the Society. General Committee: The General Committee is a committee that meets regularly and is made up of members of the Mississauga City Council. Planning and Development Committee: The planning and development committee is composed of 10 board members and its main responsibility is to meet the requirements of the Land use planning law by offering the public the opportunity to express their point of view on planning policies and development applications. The Committee also examines the planning policies and conditions under which site-specific development may occur. Recommendations made by the Planning and Development Committee are forwarded to Council for consideration and adoption.

Other Committees: The mayor and city councilors are members of various committees that are formed to obtain input from appointed members of the public on specific important issues such as accessibility, public vehicles and road safety. The recommendations made by the committees are presented to the municipal council for discussion and decision. Advisory committees are made up of Council members and citizens. Citizen members of committees have the same four-year term as the mayor and councilors. How to make a request or submit information

There are a number of ways you can choose to ask questions, make requests, or present information to Mississauga City Council.

Public question period

The public can attend a meeting in person to ask a question on an agenda item during the question period of the meeting. Each speaker has a speaking limit of five minutes.
